Things to do in Cincinnati: Over-the-Rhine and Findlay Market
Things to do in Cincinnati: Over-the-Rhine's historic buildings, Findlay Market and one food or brewery stop.
Start Cincinnati with Over-the-Rhine’s buildings and Findlay Market’s food, then choose one brewery or museum rather than rushing between them all. Washington Park gives you somewhere to pause along the way. These six stops help you put together a neighborhood day and a separate art outing.
1. Over-the-Rhine’s historic streets
Start by looking up at the Italianate buildings rather than moving straight between restaurants. Over-the-Rhine’s nineteenth-century German roots give context to the neighborhood’s name and its brewing history. A short walk here makes a good introduction before you sit down for food.
Good to know
- Use Visit Cincy’s neighborhood guide to choose a short route around the places you actually want to visit.
- The buildings are not all visitor attractions; enjoy the street views and respect private entrances.
- Keep a meal or market stop in the plan so the walk has a comfortable stopping point.
2. Findlay Market
Make this your food stop rather than trying to fit several restaurants into one afternoon. The year-round market gives you a place to browse and choose what you want when you arrive. On weekends, the Farm Shed farmers market adds another reason to look around.
Good to know
- The market opens Tuesday–Sunday and closes Monday; check the current daily hours before going.
- The farmers market runs Saturday and Sunday in the Farm Shed, with shorter hours than the main market.
- For driving, use the market’s official parking page: its North and South lots are separate from the Findlay Garage, and lot pay stations take cards.
3. Washington Park
Use Washington Park as a pause in your Over-the-Rhine day. There is seating at the Porch and food and shopping in the surrounding streets, so you do not need to fill the stop with a planned activity. Check the park calendar if you would like to catch something organized.
Good to know
- Look up any event separately before making it the focus of your visit.
- Bike racks are at the 13th Street entrance; riding inside the park is generally prohibited.
- Do not assume the Porch’s concessions operate whenever the park is accessible; check current service information.
4. Rhinegeist Brewery
Choose Rhinegeist if you would rather make one brewery the social stop of the day. The taproom sits inside the former Christian Moerlein bottling plant, connecting a working brewery with Over-the-Rhine’s older beer-making story. Stay indoors for a drink and conversation rather than making the visit depend on the rooftop.
Good to know
- Find it at 1910 Elm Street; check current taproom hours, especially before an early weekday visit.
- Children are welcome with an accompanying adult.
- For step-free access, the public elevator is reached through the Private Events entrance just south of the main entrance.
- If you want a brewery tour, check and book that separately from a taproom visit.
5. Contemporary Arts Center
Head downtown for a different kind of indoor stop. This is a non-collecting arts center, so the exhibitions, rather than a permanent collection, shape what you see. Check what is on and choose the work that interests you instead of expecting the same galleries on every visit.
Good to know
- The galleries normally open Wednesday–Sunday and close Monday and Tuesday.
- General admission is paid; visitors 18 and under enter free. Check current prices on the CAC website.
- Gallery floors can close between exhibitions, so check what is actually open before traveling.
- The address is 44 E. 6th Street; the café has separate hours from the galleries.
6. Cincinnati Art Museum
Save a separate museum visit for a longer look at art, or make it your main indoor afternoon. If you are visiting with children, the Rosenthal Education Center adds hands-on artmaking rather than another room of objects to look at. Choose a few galleries and leave time to enjoy them.
Good to know
- Normally open Tuesday–Sunday, with later hours on Thursday; check current hours and holiday changes.
- Check individual exhibitions before visiting, as some require tickets.
- The Rosenthal Education Center offers free family artmaking during museum hours.
Quick tips
- A simple Over-the-Rhine day: a short architecture walk, food at Findlay Market, then Washington Park or Rhinegeist.
- Check Monday plans carefully: Findlay Market and both art venues normally close then, and the Contemporary Arts Center also closes Tuesday.
