Things to do in Falun in winter: mine tours, museums, swims

5 things to do in Falun in winter: Falu Gruva mine tours, Dalarnas museum, Carl Larsson-gården, Lugnet and winter walks, with tips.

Winter in Falun is cosy and very local. The good news is that the best things to do here work in winter too: the mine is about the same temperature all year, the museums are warm, and there's plenty to do whether it's sunny or grey. And in early 2027, the Nordic World Ski Championships come to town. Here's how to make the most of a winter visit.

1. Go underground at Falu Gruva

The guided mine tour runs all year, so winter is a great time to go. You'll head down through passages and chambers from the 1600s and hear how this mine shaped Sweden. Above ground, walk around the giant Stora Stöten pit, which looks especially dramatic in snow.

Good to know

  • The tour takes about an hour, in Swedish or English. Book on falugruva.se.
  • It's around 6°C underground, which feels mild after the cold outside. Still wear warm clothes and good shoes.
  • Winter hours: the visitor centre is open Tuesday to Sunday, and the mine museum is open weekends only. It's closed on 24–25 December and 31 December–1 January.

2. Warm up at Dalarnas museum

The perfect indoor afternoon. See Dala horses, folk costumes, Dalarna art, Hagström guitars and Selma Lagerlöf's preserved study, then have lunch or fika at Restaurant Plock inside the museum.

Good to know

  • Open Tuesday to Sunday, closed Mondays. Under-18s go free.
  • On some Wednesdays (even weeks) the museum stays open until 7 pm, with evening programmes. See the calendar on dalarnasmuseum.se.

3. Carl Larsson-gården in winter light

The Larssons' home in Sundborn is shown on guided tours all year, and the warm, colourful rooms feel extra inviting on a dark winter day.

Good to know

  • Visits are by guided tour only. English tours run on weekends at 2:15 pm.
  • Book ahead on carllarsson.se.

4. Swim and relax at Lugnet

When it's freezing outside, Lugnet's swimming hall is a local favourite, with a family pool and a relax area for a slow afternoon.

Good to know

  • Opening hours vary by pool and day, so check lugnet.se.
  • The FIS Nordic World Ski Championships take place at Lugnet from 24 February to 7 March 2027. Expect a festival feel across Falun, and book accommodation early.

5. A winter walk through Elsborg and Staberg

On a crisp, clear day, walk through Elsborg's little red wooden houses on the way to the mine. Or head out to Stabergs bergsmansgård, whose farm area and garden are always open, then warm up at Stabergs Krog, which serves food and fika year-round.

Good to know

  • Daylight is short in winter, so do the outdoor walks around midday.
  • Wear shoes with good grip, as paths can be icy.

Quick tips

  • Mondays are tricky in winter: the mine's visitor centre and Dalarnas museum are both closed.
  • Pair one outdoor walk with one indoor stop each day to keep it comfortable.
  • Find winter events in Falun on Socroo below, and invite someone to come along.
