Free things to do in Chicago

Free zoos, museums, parks, beaches and events in Chicago, plus how to find free events happening this week.

You can put together a varied Chicago day without paying admission at every stop. Mix public art with a free zoo visit, make time for Mexican art in Pilsen, or keep things simple beside the river and lake. These six places are starting points, not a challenge to fit everything into one day.

1. Millennium Park

You do not need a paid attraction to spend time with Chicago’s public art. Start with the reflections in Cloud Gate, then take a slower turn through Lurie Garden. If a free concert fits your dates, let that become the main plan rather than rushing on.

Good to know

  • Park admission is free.
  • Check the current programme for free performances and date-specific entry arrangements.
  • A walk through the park works as its own outing; do not assume an event runs every day.

2. Chicago Riverwalk

Take your time beside the river rather than treating this as a route to somewhere else. The Riverwalk follows the south bank, with public art and places to pause while boats pass. It is an easy plan to share with someone when you would rather talk and wander than book a full itinerary.

Good to know

  • The route stretches from Lake Michigan to Lake Street.
  • Keep the outing to a walk if you want to avoid spending; food, drinks and boat excursions are separate extras.
  • For a boat tour or kayak outing, check the official operator’s current prices, booking requirements and operating dates.

3. Lincoln Park Zoo

Give yourself permission to explore slowly rather than trying to see every animal. Lincoln Park Zoo makes a relaxed outdoor plan, with animal habitats and gardens to break up your walk. Pick a few areas that interest you and leave the rest for another visit.

Good to know

  • General admission is free, with no reservation needed.
  • The zoo opens every day, but buildings and grounds can have different hours; check the visitor page.
  • Parking and some tours, rides and animal experiences cost extra; check the official site for current prices.

4. Chicago Cultural Center

Step inside for a change of pace from the waterfront. The Tiffany stained-glass dome gives you a reason to look up, while exhibitions let you spend a little longer with Chicago’s arts scene. Choose this when you want an indoor stop with something to talk about afterwards.

Good to know

  • The building and its exhibitions are free to visit.
  • Check the current exhibition and performance programme rather than expecting an event on arrival.
  • Confirm visitor hours and any access notices before making a special trip.

5. North Avenue Beach

A day by the lake can be as simple as sand, conversation and a view of the water. North Avenue Beach gives you that without an admission charge. Treat a swim as optional and let the lifeguards and current conditions decide whether it belongs in your day.

Good to know

  • Beach admission is free; keep refreshments and other extras separate from your free plan.
  • Swimming is permitted only in designated areas during beach season while lifeguards are on duty, normally 11am–7pm.
  • Check the Park District’s swim conditions and follow flags and lifeguard instructions before entering the water.

6. National Museum of Mexican Art

Head to Pilsen for an art-focused outing that does not depend on beach weather. The National Museum of Mexican Art is a good reason to give one museum your attention rather than squeeze several into the day. Start with the current exhibitions and leave time to talk about what catches your eye.

Good to know

  • Museum admission is always free.
  • It normally opens Tuesday to Sunday and closes on Mondays and major holidays; check for special notices.
  • Find it at 1852 W. 19th Street in Pilsen.
  • The museum lists the Pink Line’s Damen and 18th Street stops among its public-transport options.

Quick tips

  • Keep free admission separate from the rest of your budget: transport, parking, refreshments and optional experiences can still cost money.
  • Choose a couple of places you actually want to explore rather than crossing the city to collect free stops.
  • For events and museum offers beyond this list, check the official terms, booking rules and any residency restrictions.
