Free things to do in Manchester

Free museums, galleries, libraries, parks and walks in Manchester, plus free events happening soon.

You do not need an admission budget to make a thoughtful day out in Manchester. Start with science, natural history or a remarkable library, then leave space for art or a garden walk. These six places have free general access, with booking requirements and optional extras worth checking before you go.

1. Science and Industry Museum

Give Manchester’s industrial story some time rather than treating this as a quick shelter stop. The museum explores innovations and ideas that began in the city and went on to change the world, giving you a different way to understand the streets outside.

Good to know

  • General admission is free; some exhibitions and events cost extra. Check the official site for current prices.
  • Book a free admission ticket in advance, as the museum recommends.
  • Check visitor notices before travelling: restoration work means some buildings and areas may be closed.

2. Manchester Museum

Start with Stan the Tyrannosaurus rex, then change pace in the South Asia Gallery, where personal stories bring the displays closer to everyday life. You can choose one part of the museum to explore properly rather than trying to see everything.

Good to know

  • Galleries and exhibitions are free, but the main temporary exhibition requires advance booking.
  • The museum is on Oxford Road and normally closes on Mondays.
  • Check the official visitor page for current hours and gallery closures before setting off.

3. The John Rylands Library

Come for the neo-Gothic architecture, then give the books and collections on display a little attention too. This is a chance to enjoy a library as a place to explore, not simply a backdrop for a photograph.

Good to know

  • Admission is free and no booking is required.
  • Public visiting normally runs Wednesday to Saturday; check the official site for current hours.
  • At busy times you may have to queue outside, so bring a waterproof layer.

4. People’s History Museum

Spend some time with the story of democracy and the people who have pushed for change. It is a thoughtful choice if you would rather leave with something to discuss than another list of objects you have seen.

Good to know

  • Entry is free; donations are welcome.
  • The museum normally closes on Tuesdays. Check the official site for current hours and additional closures.
  • Groups of more than six should use the museum’s group enquiry process; booking is required to guarantee group entry.

5. The Whitworth and its Art Garden

Let art and nature share the visit rather than choosing between them. You can spend time inside the gallery, then step into the Art Garden, whose planting is designed around changing texture, colour and scent through the seasons.

Good to know

  • Gallery entry is free.
  • The usual opening pattern is Tuesday to Sunday, with late opening on Thursdays; check current hours and entrance notices.
  • Treat the garden as an optional outdoor part of your visit if the weather is unkind.

6. Fletcher Moss Park and Gardens

Leave room for a quieter walk among the gardens rather than filling your whole day with indoor stops. Choose a route that suits your energy and enjoy the change of scene without turning it into a long-distance outing.

Good to know

  • The park and gardens are free and open daily from dawn to dusk; tennis courts have a separate charge.
  • Entrances include Millgate Lane, Stenner Lane and Wilmslow Road.
  • The rockery is not wheelchair-accessible, and some paths can be challenging; check the official access advice before choosing your route.

Quick tips

  • Keep free general admission separate from optional exhibitions, events, food and transport when working out your budget.
  • Book where advised: free entry does not always mean you can arrive without planning.
  • Choose a couple of places you really want to explore rather than rushing through all six.
