Free things to do in New York

Free walks, ferries, parks and events in New York City, and how to find free events this week.

A New York outing does not have to revolve around a ticket. You can take a free ferry journey, walk through parks or spend time with the public library’s collections. Choose a few of these six ideas and leave space to sit, look around and enjoy the city with someone else.

1. Staten Island Ferry

Make the journey itself part of your day rather than just a way to get somewhere. The Staten Island Ferry connects Lower Manhattan and Staten Island, giving you a straightforward reason to spend time on the water. Decide whether you want to explore after arriving or plan a return journey.

Good to know

  • NYC DOT’s Staten Island Ferry service is free.
  • It operates every day, year-round; check the official schedule and service information before travelling.
  • Use the NYC DOT page to identify the service rather than assuming every ferry in New York is free.

2. The High Line

Use this West Side park as an excuse to slow down and look around. You can make a short walk your whole plan rather than feeling you have to cover every part of it. If you would like more context, look for one of the free public tours.

Good to know

  • Check seasonal opening hours on the official visitor page.
  • Use the entrance map and live elevator status if you need step-free access.
  • Free docent-led public tours run on selected days; check the schedule before planning around one.

3. Brooklyn Bridge Park

Give yourself time beside the water instead of moving straight on to another landmark. Brooklyn Bridge Park has riverfront promenades, gardens and city views, so a simple walk can feel like a complete outing. Pick a section that appeals to you and leave room to sit together.

Good to know

  • Check the park’s alerts for weather, construction and maintenance closures.
  • Playgrounds, piers and other facilities can have different hours from the park itself.
  • The park recommends walking, cycling or public transport because nearby parking is limited; transport costs are separate.

4. Central Park: Bethesda Terrace

Choose one part of Central Park and enjoy it properly. Bethesda Terrace overlooks the Lake and the Ramble, with an arcade and carved architectural details that reward a closer look. It is a good place to pause and people-watch rather than turn your visit into a long-distance walk.

Good to know

  • Find Bethesda Terrace mid-park at 72nd Street.
  • Check the Conservancy’s current alerts, including fountain restoration notices; do not rely on seeing the water running.
  • Use the official park map to plan your walk and locate facilities.

5. New York Public Library: the Polonsky Exhibition

Make room for an indoor outing built around stories rather than shopping. The Polonsky Exhibition at the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building brings together material from the library’s research collections, including manuscripts, images and letters. Choose a few objects that interest you instead of trying to absorb everything.

Good to know

  • The library’s exhibitions are free.
  • Check the exhibition page for item-rotation closures and current visitor arrangements.
  • Last entry is 30 minutes before the building closes; allow for a possible wait.
  • Free exhibition tours are offered; check the current schedule before making one your main plan.

6. Bryant Park

Keep this as a low-pressure plan: a place to pause, talk and see what is happening. The lawn hosts free events including yoga and movie nights, but you do not need a packed programme to enjoy a break. Check the day’s arrangements and let the visit stay simple.

Good to know

  • Check the daily lawn message before planning to sit on the grass.
  • The lawn can close for maintenance, wet weather or recovery around major events.
  • Look up individual event dates and participation details; a free event is not necessarily available whenever you arrive.

Quick tips

  • Choose a few stops that suit your day rather than treating all six as one itinerary.
  • Allow for transport and food even when admission or the activity itself is free.
  • Check event listings and access notices shortly before leaving; keep the library exhibition as an indoor option when it is open.
