Things to do in Gävle: Railway Museum and Boulognerskogen
Things to do in Gävle: the Swedish Railway Museum and the Boulognerskogen park.
Gävle works well when you mix a little industrial history with time outdoors. Start with the Swedish Railway Museum, then make room for Boulognerskogen, the old streets of Gamla Gefle and the county museum. These six places give you a choice of quiet walks, hands-on history and a seasonal family day out.
1. Swedish Railway Museum
You do not have to know your locomotives to enjoy this museum. The exhibitions follow Sweden’s railways through the people who built, worked on and travelled on them, with the vehicles giving the story a very tangible scale. There is a playroom too, so you can give younger visitors a break without ending the visit.
Good to know
- Find it at Rälsgatan 1. Regular opening is Tuesday to Sunday; check holiday exceptions on jarnvagsmuseet.se.
- Adults pay admission and visitors aged 0–18 go free. Tickets are available online or at the museum.
- The Train Hall and outdoor Railway Park have seasonal arrangements. Check what is open rather than assuming every part is included in your day.
- Restaurant Ångpannan and the museum shop are on site.
2. Boulognerskogen and Stadsträdgården
Give yourself a break from sightseeing in this riverside park, where tall pines, open lawns and paths beside Gavleån make it easy to slow down. It joins Stadsträdgården, so you can make your walk longer without finding another destination. Bring a picnic, find a bench or let the children spend time at the playground.
Good to know
- There are picnic tables, barbecue places and a public toilet near the café.
- The café and mini-golf are seasonal; check the municipality’s park page before relying on them.
- Keep dogs on a lead, and give pedestrians priority if you cycle through the park.
3. Gamla Gefle
For a quieter look at Gävle, wander through the cobbled streets of Gamla Gefle. The eighteenth-century houses and artists’ connections give this part of town a different feel from a museum visit. You do not need a long checklist here: take your time with the streets and buildings.
Good to know
- Start at Snus-Majas tomt on Övre Bergsgatan, the starting point suggested by Visit Gävle.
- Wear shoes that are comfortable on cobbles.
- Keep your visit to public streets unless a courtyard or building is clearly open to visitors.
4. Länsmuseet Gävleborg
This is a good stop if you want more than one version of the region’s story. Swedish art from the seventeenth century onwards sits alongside cultural-history displays and changing exhibitions. Pick the collection that interests you most, then leave time for the café or shop rather than trying to see everything.
Good to know
- The museum is at Södra Strandgatan 20, around three minutes’ walk from Gävle Central Station.
- Adults pay admission; under-20s go free. Check current prices on the museum’s visitor page.
- It is normally closed on Mondays, with additional holiday closures.
- There is an accessible entrance and a lift; consult the access information if you need more detail.
5. Hemlingby recreation area
Head to Hemlingby when you would rather have a woodland walk than another indoor stop. This nature reserve just over three kilometres south of the centre has trails through forest, meadows and more open ground. Choose a route to suit your energy, or use the outdoor gym for a more active visit.
Good to know
- There are trails of different lengths and a nature trail; choose your route before setting off.
- Read the municipality’s current notices for trail lighting and parking changes, especially if you are arriving late in the day.
- Hemlingbystugan is currently listed as closed for renovation. Bring your own food and drink rather than depending on the café.
6. Furuvik
If you are travelling with children, Furuvik gives you a bigger outing with animals, amusement rides and an adventure pool in one place. You can shape the day around the things your group actually enjoys rather than trying to fit in every attraction. It is a seasonal addition to a Gävle visit, not a year-round substitute for the museums.
Good to know
- Check the current opening calendar before arranging your trip.
- Read the ticket conditions and attraction information before buying, including any ride restrictions relevant to your group.
- If the adventure pool is part of your plan, pack swimwear and check its opening arrangements separately.
Quick tips
- A simple first day: explore Gamla Gefle and the county museum, then leave the afternoon for Boulognerskogen.
- Give the Railway Museum its own unhurried visit, especially when the summer areas are open.
- Both the Railway Museum and county museum normally close on Mondays. Use that day for a park or nature walk instead.
