Things to do in Halmstad in winter: Mjellby and Tylösand

What to do in Halmstad in winter: Mjellby Art Museum's surrealists, Tylösand out of beach season and a short trail walk.

Halmstad in winter works well as a mix of art indoors and short walks outside. Make Mjellby’s surrealist collection the starting point, then take in Tylösand without planning a summer beach day. A short stretch of Prince Bertil’s Trail and another gallery visit give you options for different weather. Here are five places to choose from.

1. Surrealism indoors at Mjellby

Give yourself time to look slowly at Mjellby rather than treating it as a brief shelter from the weather. The museum’s collection connects Halmstad with surrealism through the Halmstad Group, Thea Ekström and their wider artistic circles. Check the current exhibitions to see which part of that story is on display during your stay.

Good to know

  • Normally open Tuesday–Sunday, but check the calendar for exhibition changes before travelling.
  • Adults pay admission; under-20s enter free. Check current prices on the museum’s official page.
  • It is outside the centre. Use the museum’s travel page and Hallandstrafiken to plan bus stops and the final walk.
  • There is a shop and simple fika, useful if you want a pause before heading back.

2. Tylösand out of beach season

In winter, make Tylösand a short encounter with the coast rather than a day of beach activities. The dunes, sand and lifeguard tower still give the place its shape. Walk as far as feels comfortable, then leave time for your next indoor stop.

Good to know

  • Check wind and weather before choosing the length of your walk.
  • Do not rely on summer beach restaurants being open; check winter hours individually.
  • Use the official destination page to plan your visit, and keep the beach walk flexible.

3. A short walk on Prince Bertil’s Trail

The trail is useful even when you have no intention of walking all 18 kilometres. Pick part of the Grötvik–Tylösand section for a coastal outing, or stay closer to town by starting at Halmstad Castle. An out-and-back walk lets you turn around when you have had enough fresh air.

Good to know

  • Choose a short section from the official route map; the full trail runs from the castle to Möllegård.
  • If walking one way, check current Hallandstrafiken connections before starting.
  • Allow daylight for your walk and shorten it if the weather or footing makes it uncomfortable.

4. Warm up at Hallands Konstmuseum

This is a useful second art stop, especially if you want to keep the afternoon indoors. The exhibitions often draw on the museum’s Halland collection, giving you a broader regional picture after Mjellby. Leave time for the river-facing restaurant if its hours fit your visit.

Good to know

  • Normally closed Mondays, with later opening on Wednesdays; check Christmas and New Year exceptions.
  • Under-20s enter free. Adults should compare current single-entry prices with the combination ticket for Mjellby.
  • Check the weekend guided-tour programme if you would like an introduction to the exhibitions.

5. Hallandsgården and a Galgberget walk

For another short outdoor option, walk among Hallandsgården’s old buildings on Galgberget. The grounds stay open outside summer, so you can see the regional buildings without expecting a full indoor museum visit. Choose this as a walk, with the galleries as your warm part of the day.

Good to know

  • The grounds are open year-round, but building interiors and the café are summer facilities.
  • Do not plan on museum fika here in winter; arrange your warm stop elsewhere.
  • Keep the walk to daylight and choose footwear suited to the conditions.

Quick tips

  • Check Mjellby’s exhibition calendar first, then fit the outdoor walk around your museum visit.
  • Treat the beach and trail as short alternatives, not two long walks you have to complete.
  • Check winter restaurant and public-holiday museum hours individually.
