Things to do in Kalmar: Kalmar Castle and maritime history

Things to do in Kalmar: Kalmar Castle, maritime history beyond the castle, and art in the planned city.

Kalmar's castle is the obvious starting point, but don't stop there. The story continues at the county museum with finds from the warship Kronan, then shifts to Baroque streets and contemporary art. These six stops take you from the old town by the castle to the later city centre on Kvarnholmen.

1. Kalmar Castle

The castle's island setting makes its old defensive role easy to understand. Inside, the royal apartments and exhibitions tell a broader story of the Kalmar Union, the Vasa kings and conflict near the former Danish border. Give yourself time for both the interiors and the view from the ramparts.

Good to know

  • Admission is paid; check current tickets and available tours on kalmarslott.se.
  • Opening days and hours change through the year, especially in winter. Check your actual date before planning around it.
  • Find the castle at Kungsgatan 1.

2. Kalmar County Museum and Kronan

Here the story moves out into the Baltic. Kronan sank off Öland in 1676, and the museum displays recovered cannons, coin hoards and objects that help you picture life aboard. It's worth looking beyond the treasure to the people whose belongings survived on the seabed.

Good to know

  • Check kalmarlansmuseum.se for current admission, opening hours and guided activities.
  • Families can also explore Superkronan, the museum’s child-focused exhibition.
  • There is a museum restaurant with views over Kalmarsund; check its own hours if you want lunch.

3. Kalmar Art Museum

The art museum gives you a change of pace from royal and naval history. Its changing exhibitions focus on contemporary art, and the award-winning building in the city park is part of the visit. Have a look at what's on before deciding how long to stay.

Good to know

  • Normally open Tuesday–Friday noon–4 pm and weekends 11 am–4 pm; check holiday changes.
  • Adults normally pay admission, but Fridays are free. Check current concessions online.
  • Sunday exhibition tours are included in admission; check the programme for time and language.

4. Kalmar Cathedral and Stortorget

The Baroque cathedral stands at the heart of the later city on Kvarnholmen. Designed by Nicodemus Tessin the Elder and completed in 1703, it feels very different from the castle. Take a look around the square before stepping inside: the setting helps explain its place in the planned city.

Good to know

  • The church publishes weekday hours of 8 am–6 pm and weekend hours of 9 am–4 pm.
  • Sightseeing is not allowed during services, concerts and other church activities; check access before setting off.

5. Kvarnholmen’s streets and fortifications

Kalmar moved its centre to Kvarnholmen in the mid-1600s, and parts of the defensive walls still survive. Walk the streets around Stortorget, then look for the remaining fortifications. It's a useful way to connect the cathedral with the city's military history rather than seeing them as separate sights.

Good to know

  • Use Destination Kalmar’s places-of-interest guide to locate the surviving walls.
  • Combine this walk with the cathedral; both belong to the Kvarnholmen part of your visit.
  • Treat wall-top stretches as optional and stay at street level if the footing is poor.

6. The Old Town and city park

Beside the castle, the Old Town shows you where Kalmar stood before the move to Kvarnholmen. The houses you see today include well-preserved buildings from the 1700s and 1800s, rather than an intact medieval town. Continue into the English-style city park for a gentler finish to the historical walk.

Good to know

  • Combine the Old Town with the castle, and the park with the art museum.
  • These are outdoor walks, so save them for the part of the day with the best weather.
  • The city park has a playground if children need a break from museums.

Quick tips

  • Split the sights into two outings: castle, Old Town and art museum; then Kronan, cathedral and Kvarnholmen.
  • If you want to keep costs down, check the art museum’s free Friday admission.
