Things to do in Kingston, NY in the fall: Uptown and Rondout
Fall in Kingston, New York: Uptown's historic architecture without a foliage deadline, and a separate trip to Rondout.
A fall visit to Kingston, New York, does not need a perfect foliage weekend. Uptown’s old streets and historic interiors give you plenty to explore, while Rondout offers a separate waterfront day. The important seasonal detail is access: several tours finish their regular season in October. Here are five ways to plan around that, without making autumn colour the whole point of the trip.
1. Take a Stockade District walk
Make Uptown’s architecture the reason for your autumn walk. The old street plan and surviving limestone houses reward a closer look whether the trees are changing colour or already bare. Use Friends of Historic Kingston’s walking guide to give the stroll a story.
Good to know
- Download the self-guided Stockade route before setting off.
- Guided walks operate May through October; check the current schedule if you want a guide.
- For a November trip, plan a self-guided walk rather than assume a seasonal tour is available.
2. Step inside the Fred J. Johnston House
For a fall day with some time indoors, look at the house saved by antiques dealer Fred Johnston. Its furnishings and decorative arts make a good contrast to the stone buildings on your Uptown walk. You get a sense of one collector’s eye as well as the work of preserving an old home.
Good to know
- Interiors are seen by guided tour only.
- The usual visiting season is May through October, on Fridays and Saturdays; confirm hours and fees directly.
- Do not plan a November interior visit without checking with Friends of Historic Kingston first.
3. Visit Senate House
Autumn has a direct connection to this house: New York’s first Senate met here in the fall of 1777. The house and museum add context to a walk around Uptown, beyond simply admiring old buildings. Put this visit first in your planning if you want a guided interior.
Good to know
- Regular drop-in tours run through October 31; check current days and departure times with New York State Parks.
- From November to mid-April, tours require advance appointment.
- House tours and museum admission are paid; the grounds are open dawn to dusk.
4. Give Rondout its own fall walk
Save a second outing for the streets leading down to Rondout Creek. The former canal village tells a different story from Uptown, with commercial buildings and cast-iron storefronts linked to its maritime growth. Follow a self-guided route and let the waterfront be the destination, without needing a promised peak-colour date.
Good to know
- Download the Rondout walking guide from Friends of Historic Kingston.
- Its guided Rondout walks run May through October; check the current schedule.
- The district slopes towards the water, so allow for an uphill return if you explore beyond the waterfront.
5. Add the Maritime Museum or a Solaris cruise
The Hudson River Maritime Museum gives your waterfront day an indoor anchor, with objects and vessels that explain the river’s working past. Earlier in fall, a Solaris cruise can take the story onto Rondout Creek and the Hudson itself. Choose a museum-only visit if the boat season has ended.
Good to know
- Check the museum’s current fall hours before going; museum tickets are sold on site.
- Solaris operates May through October, not throughout fall; book a listed departure on the museum website.
- Cruise tickets include museum admission.
- The boat has open sides beneath its canopy; bring a warm layer and use shore restrooms before boarding.
Quick tips
- For September or October, build the day around any guided visit you want; for November, check appointment requirements before travelling.
- Keep Uptown and Rondout as separate outings if you want time for interiors as well as walking.
