Things to do in Miami: Vizcaya Museum and Gardens
Things to do in Miami: a focused visit to Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, the historic estate's house, gardens and village.
If Vizcaya is the reason you are visiting Miami, give the estate more than a quick photo stop. Its house, gardens and working village tell different parts of the same story, from James Deering’s winter home to the people and spaces that kept it running. Start with those three places, then choose one of two museums for another day.
1. Vizcaya’s Main House
The Main House is the starting point for understanding Vizcaya. Its Mediterranean-inspired rooms and historic collections were designed for James Deering’s winter life in Miami, but the house also embraced the technology of its time. Look for that mix of old-world appearance and modern ambition rather than treating it as just a grand backdrop.
Good to know
- This is a paid museum visit; check current tickets and access information on vizcaya.org.
- The museum entrance is at 3251 South Miami Avenue, about a ten-minute walk from Vizcaya Metrorail station.
- Check current restoration and room-access notices before booking.
2. Vizcaya’s formal gardens
Outside, the garden is laid out as a series of rooms rather than one open lawn. Geometric hedges lead to spaces including the Secret Garden, Theater Garden and Maze Garden, while native forest survives alongside the designed landscape. Give yourself time to notice how the planting and architecture work together.
Good to know
- Wear shoes suitable for uneven stone paths and steps.
- The garden audio tour is included with museum admission and can be used through Vizcaya’s app or your browser.
- Treat plants and garden structures as museum objects: do not climb on walls or trees or touch the plants.
3. Vizcaya Village
Cross to the working side of the estate to understand what made the house possible. The Village’s historic buildings once housed staff, workshops and the agricultural operations that supplied the property. It is a useful counterpoint to the formal rooms and gardens, not simply another view of the same house.
Good to know
- The Village is across South Miami Avenue from the museum; follow the posted directions rather than assuming it shares the same entrance.
- Check the programme for market dates and guided visits before planning your trip around one.
- The Village Café occupies the restored Superintendent’s House; check its current opening times separately.
4. Pérez Art Museum Miami
For another museum visit, choose PAMM and give your attention to the art rather than rushing between institutions. The museum offers collection and exhibition tours, including programmes with different cultural perspectives. Check what is on before deciding whether to make it your main stop or a shorter visit.
Good to know
- Buy online if possible: tickets are subject to capacity and can sell out.
- The museum is normally closed Tuesday and Wednesday, with later opening on Thursday.
- Check current admission and concession categories on pamm.org.
5. Frost Science
If your group would rather explore science, Frost combines exhibitions, an aquarium and a planetarium. That gives you several different ways to spend the visit without having to agree on a single subject. Plan around a planetarium show if that is the part you most want to see.
Good to know
- The museum opens daily and recommends buying tickets in advance.
- The Explorer ticket includes one planetarium show, subject to availability; reserve it onsite on the day.
- Ticket prices depend on your visit date, so compare the actual dates on the booking calendar.
Quick tips
- Give Vizcaya’s house and gardens one visit, then check whether the Village programme fits the same day.
- Choose PAMM or Frost for your next museum outing rather than trying to fit everything into the Vizcaya visit.
