Things to do in Örebro: Örebro Castle and Wadköping
Things to do in Örebro: Örebro Castle and the old wooden houses and courtyards of Wadköping.
Örebro is a good city for mixing a proper history visit with time outdoors. Start at the castle in the middle of town, follow the river towards Wadköping’s wooden houses, then decide whether you want gardens, wetland paths or a view from Svampen. Here are five places worth making time for, with the details that make planning easier.
1. Örebro Castle
The castle stands on its own island in the Svartån, right in the city centre. Go inside for historic halls, exhibitions and the stories behind a building that has watched over Örebro for centuries. There are activities for children too, so you do not need to make this a visit just for architecture lovers.
Good to know
- Indoor visits require an admission ticket; check current prices, hours and the day’s programme on orebroslott.se.
- The public entrance is in the southwest tower, to the left of Lill-Annas Castle Café. The address is Kansligatan 1.
- The castle shop accepts cards and Swish, not cash. There is no locked luggage storage.
2. Wadköping
Wadköping brings older Örebro into view through wooden houses, cobbled streets and courtyards. It is not only somewhere to look at buildings: craftspeople, small shops, museums and places to eat make it a living part of the city. Take your time browsing rather than expecting one single museum route.
Good to know
- You will find Wadköping beside the Svartån, beyond Stadsparken from the city centre.
- Check individual shops, workshops and museums for their hours; the neighbourhood is not run to one shared timetable.
- Look at the current programme for markets, concerts and other activities rather than assuming an event will be on when you visit.
3. Stadsparken and Stadsträdgården
Stadsparken is a good place to stop doing quite so much. Wander through the garden areas, bring something to read or let children spend time at the playground. It also makes a natural outdoor pairing with nearby Wadköping, without adding another journey to your day.
Good to know
- The playground has three areas: Lilla Wadköping, Sprayparken and a more traditional area with swings, climbing equipment and zip lines.
- The park stage hosts entertainment during spring, summer and autumn. Check the programme for your dates.
- Use the municipality’s park map to find the garden and play areas before you arrive.
4. Oset and Rynningeviken nature reserve
For a break from the city streets, head to the wetlands and walking paths at Oset and Rynningeviken. The reserve has rich birdlife and a network of walking and cycling routes, so you can choose between a short outing and a longer look around. Naturens hus, in the water park, is a useful place to aim for if you want a café stop.
Good to know
- The reserve is within cycling distance of central Örebro. The municipal map shows parking, paths and picnic facilities.
- A pedestrian and cycle bridge across the Svartån connects the Oset and Rynningeviken sides near Naturens hus.
- Check the café’s own website for opening hours and food; the reserve’s walking routes and the restaurant are separate parts of the outing.
5. Svampen water tower
Svampen gives you a different view of Örebro: up above the roofs rather than beside the river. Take the lift to the top of the mushroom-shaped tower for views across the city and surrounding landscape. You can pair the outlook with food or fika, or let children play at the playground below.
Good to know
- Check current visitor and restaurant hours on svampen.nu before travelling to the tower.
- The nearest bus stop to the playground is Svampen Östra. Parking is north of the park, and cycle stands are by the tower.
- The playground below has swings and climbing equipment; there is also an outdoor gym nearby.
Quick tips
- A simple day: visit the castle, walk towards Stadsparken, then browse Wadköping and stop for fika.
- Save Oset and Rynningeviken for a separate outing if you want time for both walking and birdwatching.
- Check the castle’s daily programme before you go; exhibitions and activities determine what your admission includes.
