Things to do in Trollhättan in winter: Innovatum and locks
What to do in Trollhättan in winter: the falls and locks without waiting for a water show, and Innovatum indoors.
You don't need a waterfall release to enjoy Trollhättan in winter. The locks and river landscape make a worthwhile short daylight walk, while Innovatum gives you a warm place to spend longer with experiments and local industrial history. Keep the outdoor plans flexible, and check Saab Car Museum's closure dates before making it part of your visit.
1. Get hands-on at Innovatum Science Center
Make Innovatum the indoor anchor of your winter day. Its experiments and creative play spaces let you explore technology at your own pace, with the industrial history of the surrounding district adding a local connection. It's a good option when the weather cuts a canal walk short.
Good to know
- Normally open Tuesday–Sunday, with later opening on Thursdays; check holiday and other exceptions.
- Admission is paid, with weekday, weekend and family options listed on the official site.
- Find it at Åkerssjövägen 16, Building 60; the Innovatum district is about 1.5 km from Drottningtorget.
2. Take a short walk around the locks
The old and newer lock staircases are interesting even without a boat in sight. You can compare the routes from 1800, 1844 and 1916 and see how much engineering went into moving vessels through the landscape. In winter, make it a short look around rather than a long wait by the water.
Good to know
- Nils Ericson's Walk is the compact option at 1.6 km; only follow it as far as footing and conditions allow.
- The Canal Museum and Slusscaféet are summer-open, not dependable winter warm-up stops.
- Wear shoes with good grip, stay behind barriers and don't make the visit depend on boat traffic.
3. See the waterfall landscape from Oskarsbron
Give the falls area a brief daylight visit for the channel and its historic surroundings. Oskarsbron is a straightforward destination from the centre, and Kungsgrottan adds another point of interest nearby. Think of this as a landscape stop, not a winter water show.
Good to know
- The waterfall area is about 1 km from Drottningtorget; use the official directions via Klaffbron.
- Don't expect a scheduled waterfall release in winter; check official announcements if you want to see one.
- The full 1.6 km De Laval Walk includes uneven forest sections. Skip those if conditions make them unsuitable.
4. Walk by the canal at Spikön
If you want another outdoor option without committing to a forest hike, try Spikön and the canal-side route along Strandgatan. Sculptures give you something to look for along the way. Keep the walk short enough that it stays enjoyable, then head back for an indoor break.
Good to know
- The complete Spikörundan loop is 2.5 km; you can choose a shorter stretch instead.
- The café on Spikön opens in summer, so don't rely on it in winter.
- Use daylight for the walk and turn back if paths are slippery.
