Things to do in Visby: the old harbour, Fornsalen and walls
Things to do in Visby: the former harbour, Gotland's Fornsalen museum, gardens and the medieval defensive walls.
Visby's old town makes more sense when you start with the harbour that is no longer there. Almedalen, Strandgatan and the defensive wall tell the story of a trading town, while Fornsalen takes you much further back into Gotland's past. Add a garden and the cathedral, and you have six stops that give the streets some context as well as somewhere pleasant to wander.
1. Almedalen, the former harbour
The park you see today was once Visby's medieval harbour. Start here and imagine boats where there is now a pond and open space, before looking toward the old trading streets. It's a gentle introduction to the city and an easy place to pause during a longer walk.
Good to know
- This is the former harbour site, not today’s ferry harbour.
- There is a playground as well as the pond, useful for a stop with children.
- Continue onto Strandgatan to follow the trading story into the old town.
2. Strandgatan and the old warehouses
Strandgatan was the medieval town's main street, and surviving warehouses still give it a strong connection to trade. Look for Gamla apoteket, one of the examples highlighted in the official city guide. Taking the street slowly makes the buildings feel less like a backdrop and more like part of a working harbour town.
Good to know
- Explore the buildings from the street; this walk does not depend on access to their interiors.
- Fornsalen is on Strandgatan, so combine the street with your museum visit.
- For a shorter outing, keep to Almedalen, Strandgatan and the museum rather than crossing the whole old town.
3. Fornsalen at Gotlands Museum
This is the place to put Visby's streets into a much longer island history. The picture stones and Spillings silver treasure are highlights, but there are also fossils, archaeological finds and church art to explore. Give yourself time for whichever part catches your interest rather than treating it as a quick stop for the treasure.
Good to know
- Find it at Strandgatan 14. Opening hours differ between May–September and October–April; check holiday closures online.
- Adults pay admission; under-19s enter free. Children under 12 need an accompanying adult.
- Skepp & skoj is the family exhibition, and Café Amalia is on site for a break.
4. Kruttornet and the city wall
The wall is more than a frame for photographs: it helped protect the trading town. Kruttornet, built in the 1100s, is its oldest tower and once guarded the harbour. Start there to connect the defences with Almedalen, then follow whichever stretch of the wall suits your walk.
Good to know
- You can appreciate the tower and wall from outside without booking an interior visit.
- Use the official walking guide to link Kruttornet with Strandgatan and the garden.
- Do not plan on entering every tower or ruin; check separately for any interiors you want to see.
5. DBW Botanical Garden
Founded in 1855, the botanical garden is a change of pace from the streets and fortifications. Its sheltered setting supports plants you may not expect to see in Sweden, alongside roses and mature trees. It's a good place to take a slower turn through the town rather than keep chasing the next landmark.
Good to know
- The garden is always open and entry is free; guided tours may have a fee.
- The main entrance is at Strandgatan and S:t Olofs gränd. You can also approach from the seaside through Kärleksporten.
- Toilets are outside the northern gate.
- Flowers are seasonal, so come for the setting as well as any particular blooms.
6. Visby Cathedral, Sankta Maria
Finish with a church that is still in daily use, rather than another ruin. The cathedral brings together historic architecture, art and a quiet place to sit in the old town. You don't need to join a tour to spend a little time looking around.
Good to know
- Entry is free, with visitor information in several languages.
- Opening hours vary by season; check the cathedral’s current visitor page.
- Worship and concerts can limit sightseeing. Avoid planning a walk around the interior during the main Sunday service.
Quick tips
- A simple route: Almedalen, Strandgatan and Fornsalen, then Kruttornet and the botanical garden.
- Leave room for an unplanned lane or two, but remember that the old town is also a neighbourhood where people live.
