Things to do in Bedlington in autumn: woodland walks

An autumn walk in Bedlington Country Park: choosing a starting point, woodland details and how to shorten the route.

Autumn in Bedlington is a good excuse for an unhurried woodland walk, not a race along the whole valley. Begin in Bedlington Country Park, choose a starting point and keep the route as short as you like. If you have more time, nearby Plessey Woods and Seaton Delaval Hall offer more outdoor time, while Woodhorn gives you an indoor alternative. Those three are separate trips outside Bedlington.

1. An autumn walk in Bedlington Country Park

Make the wooded River Blyth valley the centre of your autumn visit. Start at Attlee Park or choose the western part towards Humford Mill, where much of the woodland is ancient semi-natural. Spend time noticing the trees and listening for nuthatches and woodpeckers rather than making the whole valley a distance target.

Good to know

  • Attlee Park is at the bottom of Bedlington Bank, beside Bedlington Bridge and the A193.
  • The park is open year-round, but its steep wooded slopes mean it is not all an easy, level walk.
  • For a shorter route, choose one entrance and retrace your steps; Furnace Bridge, Attlee Park and Humford Mill are different points along the same valley.
  • As an autumn precaution, wear shoes with grip, allow for slippery leaves and keep your return in daylight.

2. More woodland at nearby Plessey Woods

If you want a second woodland outing, head to Plessey Woods near Hartford Bridge rather than stretching the Bedlington walk beyond everyone’s comfort. The park combines woods, meadows and River Blyth habitat, and the entrance visitor centre makes a useful place to begin.

Good to know

  • This is a separate trip off the A192 between Bedlington and Cramlington.
  • The park is open in daylight throughout the year.
  • The café and visitor centre have shorter hours from October to March and are closed on Mondays; check before counting on a warm drink.
  • The play area and picnic area are beside the café, useful if you are visiting with children.

3. Autumn gardens at nearby Seaton Delaval Hall

For a more structured autumn walk, make a separate trip to Seaton Delaval Hall at Seaton Sluice. The National Trust highlights copper-coloured beech hedges, rowan berries and a yellowing ginkgo among its seasonal garden interest. Explore the formal garden and woodland at your own pace; the exact display depends on when you visit.

Good to know

  • Check the daily calendar because the gardens, hall and café have different hours.
  • Members enter free; non-members pay admission. See current prices on the National Trust website.
  • Dogs on leads can visit the grounds, but not the buildings.
  • Check café hours if a warm stop is part of your plan.

4. A wet-weather visit to Woodhorn in nearby Ashington

When an autumn afternoon looks better indoors, head to Woodhorn and the Ashington Group gallery. The Pitmen Painters’ pictures show life in Northumberland’s mining communities above and below ground, giving your day a local story beyond the woods.

Good to know

  • Woodhorn is in Queen Elizabeth II Country Park, Ashington, so allow for a separate journey from Bedlington.
  • Normal opening is Wednesday to Sunday, with extra days during Northumberland school holidays. Check your date.
  • Adults pay and under-18s enter free; current prices are on the museum website.
  • Ordinary admission does not require advance booking. Check separately for any seasonal event you want to attend.

Quick tips

  • For a short visit, stay with one stretch of Bedlington Country Park and return to the same starting point.
  • Keep outdoor walks for daylight and check café opening before planning a warming stop afterwards.
