Things to do in Bedlington: Bedlington Country Park
Things to do in Bedlington: woodland walks along the River Blyth in Bedlington Country Park, with tips on where to start.
Bedlington is a small Northumberland town, and its wooded stretch of the River Blyth is the place to begin. Choose a manageable walk in Bedlington Country Park, then use the town as a base for another woodland, museum, garden or coastal outing. The four places after the country park are nearby trips, not attractions in Bedlington itself.
1. Bedlington Country Park
Start with Bedlington’s wooded River Blyth valley rather than looking for a long list of town-centre attractions. The country park runs from Furnace Bridge through Attlee Park towards Humford Mill and Hartford Hall, with woodland and grassland along the north bank. Most of the western woodland is ancient semi-natural woodland, giving you a good reason to slow down and look closely.
Good to know
- The park is open all year, but the council describes a steep-sided natural valley, not a uniformly flat stroll.
- For a clearly named starting point, choose Attlee Park at the bottom of Bedlington Bank, beside Bedlington Bridge and the A193.
- Furnace Bridge marks the eastern end; Humford Mill and Hartford Hall are farther west. Pick one section and return the same way for a shorter outing.
- Look and listen for woodland and river birds, but treat a kingfisher or red squirrel sighting as a bonus.
2. Plessey Woods Country Park, nearby
For another River Blyth walk, make a separate trip to Plessey Woods near Hartford Bridge, between Bedlington and Cramlington. Woodland, meadow and riverside give you a different mix of habitats, with a visitor centre at the entrance to help you get your bearings.
Good to know
- The park is off the A192, outside Bedlington itself.
- It opens throughout the year during daylight hours.
- The entrance café overlooks the children’s play area and picnic area.
- Check café hours separately: it closes on Mondays and has shorter hours from October to March.
3. Woodhorn Museum in nearby Ashington
Make Woodhorn your nearby indoor change of pace. The permanent Ashington Group gallery shows the work of the Pitmen Painters, whose pictures record everyday life above and below ground in Northumberland’s mining communities. It is a very different way to get to know the area after a woodland walk.
Good to know
- This is in Queen Elizabeth II Country Park, Ashington, not in Bedlington; plan the journey separately.
- Adults pay admission and under-18s enter free. Check current prices on the museum website.
- Normal opening is Wednesday to Sunday, with extra opening during Northumberland school holidays.
- Ordinary admission does not need advance booking; check individual events for separate arrangements.
4. Seaton Delaval Hall, nearby at Seaton Sluice
For a nearby house-and-garden outing, head to Seaton Delaval Hall on The Avenue at Seaton Sluice. Explore the hall and formal garden, or spend more of your visit among the woodland and arboretum. It is a separate excursion from Bedlington rather than something to add to the riverside walk on foot.
Good to know
- Check the National Trust calendar: the hall, gardens and café can have different hours.
- National Trust members enter free; non-members pay admission. See current prices online.
- Dogs on leads are welcome in the grounds, but not inside the buildings.
- The Brewhouse Café is an option for a break; check its hours before relying on it.
5. Newbiggin Bay and promenade, nearby
If you would like sea air instead of more woodland, take a separate trip to Newbiggin-by-the-Sea, east of Ashington. The promenade gives you views along the sandy bay, with shops and cafés close by for a relaxed finish.
Good to know
- The main car park is at Church Point; other parking in the town is limited.
- The council lists toilets at the Maritime Centre and behind the town council offices.
- There are seasonal dog restrictions on part of the beach, so check signs before taking a dog onto the sand.
Quick tips
- Start with Attlee Park and an out-and-back walk if you want a simple introduction to the valley.
- Choose one nearby excursion rather than trying to fit every stop into the same day, and plan transport separately.
