Things to do in Helsingborg: Kärnan and Sofiero

Things to do in Helsingborg: the medieval tower Kärnan and Sofiero's palace gardens.

Helsingborg gives you a medieval tower above the city, a former royal garden just outside it and the Öresund coast close at hand. Start with Kärnan and Sofiero, then choose between open-air history at Fredriksdal, exhibitions at Dunkers and a stop by the sea. Here are five places to help you put together a visit without trying to do everything at once.

1. Kärnan and Slottshagen

Kärnan is the medieval tower above central Helsingborg, with a history rooted in the time when this was Danish territory. Explore the tower floor by floor rather than heading straight to the top: audio guides and installations explain the stories behind the walls. The surrounding Slottshagen park is worth including even if you do not go inside.

Good to know

  • The tower has seasonal opening. Check karnan.se for current hours and adult admission; visitors aged 18 and under enter free, and under-18s must be with an adult.
  • The historic tower is not accessibility-adapted. The terrace lift from Stortorget reaches the park, not the tower’s upper floors.
  • English and German audio guides are available on the official website.

2. Sofiero Palace and Gardens

Sofiero is the former royal residence just north of Helsingborg, with gardens and views across the Öresund. The rhododendrons are a particular reason to come in late spring and early summer, but you can also make the visit about the garden walks and royal setting. Give it time rather than fitting it in as a brief stop outside town.

Good to know

  • Check current admission, park hours and palace access on sofiero.se before choosing your day.
  • A bus stops outside the main entrance. There is also cycle parking, but bicycles are not allowed inside the park.
  • The park is partly hilly. Ask for the map showing the accessibility route if you need a gentler way around.
  • The rhododendrons normally flower from mid-May to mid-June; do not expect peak bloom throughout summer.

3. Fredriksdal Museums and Gardens

Fredriksdal brings historic buildings and gardens together in a large open-air museum. Come when you want room to wander and a look at cultural history beyond a single monument. You can build the visit around the gardens, then choose which buildings and exhibitions to explore from the day’s programme.

Good to know

  • Admission varies by season; visitors aged 18 and under enter free. You can buy tickets online.
  • Buildings, cafés and other businesses have their own opening hours. Check the current list rather than assuming everything opens with the grounds.
  • There are indoor picnic tables in the northern manor wing if you bring your own food.
  • Download the site map to plan your route around the 36-hectare grounds.

4. Dunkers kulturhus

Dunkers brings art, history, music and performance together in one cultural centre. It is a good indoor choice when you want an exhibition rather than another outdoor walk. Check what is on first, then make it a focused visit around the work or subject that interests you.

Good to know

  • The exhibitions normally open Tuesday to Sunday and close on Mondays, with later opening on Thursdays. The building has different hours.
  • One exhibition admission covers all exhibitions showing that day. Visitors aged 18 and under enter free; check current adult prices.
  • Find it at Kungsgatan 11. Performances have their own tickets, available through the venue’s calendar.

5. Tropical Beach

For a change from towers and museums, head to Tropical Beach. This sandy city beach puts the coast into your visit without making it a separate excursion outside Helsingborg. In summer, the palms and water give you a straightforward place to slow down after sightseeing.

Good to know

  • The beach is close to the city centre, so you can add it to a day in town rather than plan a separate journey.
  • Use Visit Helsingborg’s beach guide to compare it with Fria Bad, which has a broad sandy beach and the neighbouring Surflekan play area.
  • Make swimming a weather-dependent extra; you can keep this as a short stop by the sea instead.

Quick tips

  • Pair Kärnan with a city-centre afternoon, and give Sofiero its own outing if you want time in the gardens.
  • For a longer walk, follow the official route from Kärnan towards Sofiero through parks and Pålsjö skog; it is about 6 km one way, with a bus option back.
  • Check seasonal access before setting off: the tower, garden buildings and exhibitions do not all follow the same timetable.
