Summer in Helsingborg: Sofiero's gardens and rhododendrons, a climb in Kärnan, and a coastal addition.

Summer in Helsingborg is a good excuse to combine gardens, a tower climb and time beside the Öresund. Sofiero and Kärnan are the two main stops here, with Tropical Beach for a slower afternoon and a walking route if you want to link the city to the gardens on foot. One timing detail matters: Sofiero’s rhododendrons normally flower from mid-May to mid-June, not throughout summer.

1. Sofiero Palace and Gardens

Sofiero is a good reason to spend a summer day outside central Helsingborg. Walk through the former royal gardens, look out over the Öresund and explore the rhododendron ravines. If the flowers are your main reason for coming, aim for their normal mid-May to mid-June season rather than assuming they last all summer.

  • Check current admission, park hours and palace access on sofiero.se before choosing your day.
  • A bus stops outside the main entrance. There is also cycle parking, but bicycles are not allowed inside the park.
  • The park is partly hilly. Ask for the map showing the accessibility route if you need a gentler way around.

2. Kärnan and Slottshagen

  • The tower has seasonal opening. Check karnan.se for current hours and adult admission; visitors aged 18 and under enter free, and under-18s must be with an adult.
  • The historic tower is not accessibility-adapted. The terrace lift from Stortorget reaches the park, not the tower’s upper floors.

3. Tropical Beach

After gardens and sightseeing, take the day down a gear at Tropical Beach. The sandy city beach brings the coast into an ordinary afternoon in town, with palms adding to its summer feel. Come for time by the water, with a swim as an optional extra if conditions suit you.

  • The beach is close to the city centre, so you can add it to a day in town rather than plan a separate journey.

The official route follows Landborgspromenaden north through parks and Pålsjö skog, with repeated views towards the Öresund. It turns the garden visit into a longer outdoor day rather than just the time you spend inside the gates.

  • The walk from Kärnan to Sofiero is about 6 km one way; plan your garden visit around that distance.
  • A city bus stops outside Sofiero’s entrance, so you can walk out and take the bus back. Check the current timetable before leaving.
