Things to do in Leeds: markets, museums and waterfront
Things to do in Leeds: historic markets, themed museum collections including armour and art, and a waterfront change of scene.
Leeds is a good city for mixing everyday places with a proper museum visit. Start with market stalls and independent shops, choose between armour and art, then change the scene with a waterside walk. Here are six places to build a day or weekend around, with the practical details that help you avoid closed doors.
1. Leeds Kirkgate Market
Start with the everyday side of Leeds: stalls selling fresh food, flowers, clothing and all sorts of useful things. Kirkgate is one of Europe's largest indoor markets, so it's worth wandering beyond the first aisle. The Market Kitchen gives you a reason to stay for lunch rather than treating the building as a shopping shortcut.
Good to know
- The market normally opens Monday to Saturday and is closed on Sundays. Check the official site for current hours and bank holiday exceptions.
- The main entrance is on Vicar Lane. Leeds bus station is beside the market complex, and the railway station is around a ten-minute walk away.
- Use the official trader list if a particular stall is your reason for visiting; building opening hours are not a guarantee that every trader is serving.
2. Leeds Corn Exchange
The Corn Exchange has been a Leeds landmark since 1864, and today its independent businesses give the building a life beyond its original trading role. Browse shops run by collectors, craftspeople and other small businesses, then take time to look around the interior itself. It's a good stop even when you aren't working through a shopping list.
Good to know
- Find it on Call Lane. The official visitor page lists nearby car parks, cycle bays and public-transport options.
- The building opens daily, with later opening on Thursdays and shorter hours on Sundays and bank holidays. Check individual businesses if there is somewhere specific you want to visit.
- Pets are not allowed, apart from service or assistance dogs.
3. Royal Armouries Museum
At Leeds Dock, Royal Armouries gets you close to arms and armour and the people who made and used them. Live demonstrations can add a different way into the collection, but the objects themselves are reason enough to come. Give the museum time rather than squeezing it into the gap before lunch.
Good to know
- General entry is free. The museum recommends allowing around two to three hours.
- It normally opens Tuesday to Sunday in term time and daily during school holidays and bank holidays, 10am–5pm. Check the current programme for demonstrations and special events.
- Leeds Dock is about a 20–25-minute walk from Leeds railway station. A water taxi is another option, but check the service before relying on it.
4. Leeds Art Gallery
Choose Leeds Art Gallery when you'd like to spend time with art rather than make a full museum circuit. Collections displays sit alongside temporary exhibitions, so check what's showing and pick the part that interests you. The Tiled Hall Café gives you a good reason to slow down afterwards, in a room that was once the library's main reading room.
Good to know
- The gallery operates Give What You Can admission: you are invited to donate if able. Check current exhibition and event details for any separate arrangements.
- It is closed on Mondays; Sunday hours are shorter, and the upper galleries close earlier on Saturdays. Check the visitor page when planning a late visit.
- The café has different hours from the gallery, including Monday opening. Check both before combining them.
5. Leeds City Museum
Make this your other museum choice if you want a playful visit with room for family activities. The museum has interactive elements and a changing programme of workshops, trails and events, so it's worth looking beyond the main displays when planning. You can keep the visit focused on what suits your group rather than trying to do every activity.
Good to know
- Admission is Give What You Can, with donations invited rather than a fixed general entry charge. Check individual events for booking requirements.
- It normally opens Tuesday to Friday from 10am and at weekends from 11am, closing at 5pm. Check bank holiday and special opening arrangements.
- Find it on Millennium Square, roughly a ten-minute walk from Leeds railway station.
6. Granary Wharf and the waterfront
For a change from markets and galleries, head to the waterfront around Granary Wharf. Leeds' regenerated waterside brings together cafés, bars, public art and reminders of the working waterways. Pause here for a drink or a walk rather than making it another attraction you have to finish.
Good to know
- This is an outdoor part of the plan: bring a waterproof layer and wear shoes suitable for waterside walking.
- Check individual food and drink venues for their own hours and booking arrangements; the waterfront does not have one shared timetable.
- If you want to add Royal Armouries, plan that separately at Leeds Dock rather than assuming it is in Granary Wharf.
Quick tips
- For a market-led day, visit Kirkgate before the Corn Exchange, then choose a museum rather than trying to fit in every collection.
- Give Royal Armouries its own two-to-three-hour block, with extra time if you want to see a scheduled demonstration.
- Check Mondays carefully: several museum and gallery spaces close, while Kirkgate normally trades.
