Things to do in Leeds by season: winter, spring, summer

What to do in Leeds in every season: markets and the waterfront in spring, collections in summer and autumn, grand interiors in winter.

Leeds gives you a useful mix of covered markets, museum collections and waterside space, so a seasonal plan doesn't have to depend on an event date. Try the market and waterfront in spring, save time for armour and art in summer and autumn, and look closely at the city's interiors in winter. Here are four ways to shape a visit, with five places to choose from.

1. Spring: Kirkgate Market and Granary Wharf

Start indoors at Kirkgate, where fresh-food stalls, flowers and the Market Kitchen make it easy to turn browsing into lunch. If the weather suits, make Granary Wharf your outdoor stop for a different view of the city. The waterfront's cafés, bars and public art give you something to look for without needing a long walk.

Good to know

  • Kirkgate normally opens Monday to Saturday, not Sunday. Check current hours and bank holiday exceptions on the official market site.
  • The market entrance is on Vicar Lane, beside the bus station and around a ten-minute walk from the railway station.
  • Treat the waterfront as the flexible part of the day: bring a waterproof layer, and check individual cafés or restaurants for hours and reservations.

2. Summer: Royal Armouries at Leeds Dock

A summer visit doesn't have to mean staying outdoors all day. Make the arms and armour collection your main stop, then spend time around Leeds Dock if conditions suit. The museum's live demonstrations offer another way to explore the subject, so look at the programme before choosing when to arrive.

Good to know

  • General admission is free; allow around two to three hours for the museum. Check event listings for demonstration times and any separate tickets.
  • It normally opens Tuesday to Sunday in term time and daily in school holidays and on bank holidays. Check the current calendar rather than assuming every summer Monday is open.
  • The museum is about a 20–25-minute walk from the railway station. Check the water-taxi service if you would rather travel by boat.

3. Autumn: Leeds Art Gallery

Let the collections displays and temporary exhibitions set the pace for an autumn afternoon. Choose a few works to spend time with rather than trying to cover every room, then pause in the Tiled Hall Café. Its former life as the library's main reading room makes the interior part of the outing too.

Good to know

  • Admission is Give What You Can, with donations invited if you are able. Look up the current exhibitions and any event booking requirements.
  • The gallery is closed on Mondays and has shorter Sunday hours. Upper galleries close earlier on Saturdays, so check before planning a late visit.
  • Café hours differ from gallery hours; use the operator’s visitor page to check both.

4. Winter: Leeds Corn Exchange

Choose the Corn Exchange for an indoor outing that is as much about the building as the shopping. A Leeds landmark since 1864, it now brings together independent traders, collectors and craftspeople. Look around the interior, browse at your own pace and make any particular shop an extra rather than the only reason to come.

Good to know

  • It opens daily, with later Thursday opening and shorter Sunday and bank holiday hours. Check Christmas and New Year arrangements before travelling.
  • Find it on Call Lane; use the official visitor page for public transport, nearby parking and cycle bays.
  • Check individual businesses before planning around one shop. Service and assistance dogs are welcome, but other pets are not.

Quick tips

  • A Saturday lets you combine the market with the museums, but check the Art Gallery’s earlier upper-gallery closing time.
  • Keep the spring waterfront walk optional; the market and Corn Exchange give you indoor alternatives.
