Things to do in Lund: Botanical Garden and Kulturen
Things to do in Lund: the university's Botanical Garden, the Kulturen museum and the old university streets.
Lund is a city for walking between gardens, museums and old university buildings. Start with the Botanical Garden and Kulturen, then leave time for the cathedral, a little art and the streets that connect them. You do not need to fit everything into one day: these six places give you enough choice for a relaxed weekend.
1. Lund Botanical Garden
The university’s Botanical Garden is a place to slow down and look closely. Plants are grown here for teaching and research as well as for visitors, so you can follow your curiosity from one bed to the next rather than just look for flowers. It is an easy green break in the eastern part of central Lund.
Good to know
- Entry is free, and the outdoor garden opens daily. Check the current gate times on botan.lu.se.
- The greenhouses are closed for renovation. Check the garden’s visitor page for reopening news rather than planning an indoor visit.
- Parts of the garden are affected by building work, and the café is listed as temporarily closed. Do not rely on refreshments being available.
2. Kulturen in Lund
Give Kulturen more than a quick walk through the grounds. This museum and open-air museum spreads across two city blocks, with houses showing life in town and country from the Middle Ages to the 1930s. Step into the buildings, then pick an exhibition that interests you; the mix is what makes the visit worthwhile.
Good to know
- Adults pay admission; visitors aged 0–18 enter free. Check current prices and concessions on kulturen.com.
- The regular summer schedule runs daily from May to August. From September to April it is normally closed on Mondays, with some holiday exceptions.
- The entrance is at Tegnérsplatsen 6.
- Only assistance dogs are allowed in the museum grounds; leave pets out of this part of your plans.
3. Lund Cathedral
The cathedral gives you a very different view of the city’s past. Look for the astronomical clock, then visit the crypt to find the legendary giant Finn. You can keep it to a quiet look around or join one of the free public guided tours for more of the story.
Good to know
- Check the cathedral calendar before visiting: you cannot walk around sightseeing during services.
- Free guided tours are offered for individual visitors; organised groups have separate arrangements.
- Domkyrkoforum next door has a visitor information desk, café and toilets, with its own opening hours.
4. Lundagård and Universitetsplatsen
Take a walk through the university setting around Lundagård and Universitetsplatsen. The main university building, the Academic Society and Kungshuset give you a sense of how closely the university is woven into central Lund. This is a useful pause between museums, with the buildings themselves as the attraction.
Good to know
- Use Visit Lund’s self-guided walking route; its university stop is at Sandgatan 2.
- Plan this as an outdoor walk, not a promise of entry to university buildings.
- Combine it with the cathedral and Kulturen, which also appear on the official central walking route.
5. Skissernas Museum
Here you get to see how art takes shape before it reaches a public square or a building. Sketches, small models and large sculptural studies show artists trying out ideas, not just presenting a finished result. The sculpture park outside lets you carry that way of looking into the open air.
Good to know
- The museum normally opens Tuesday to Sunday and closes on Mondays. Check current hours and admission online.
- Students and visitors aged 25 and under have free admission; other adults normally pay.
- Public tours in Swedish and English are included in admission and do not require booking. Check the calendar for the language you want.
- The sculpture park is free and open around the clock, even when the museum is closed.
6. Stadsparken
Finish with somewhere you do not need to study anything. Stadsparken has gardens, lawns, a playground and space for a picnic, with an outdoor gym and skatepark if you still have energy. It is a good counterweight to a day of museum rooms and old buildings.
Good to know
- For younger children, the playground has a shaded area with a play train and sandpit.
- Public toilets are available by the greenhouse and the skatepark; café toilets follow the café’s opening hours.
- Bring your own picnic and choose a patch of grass, or use one of the park’s designated barbecue spots if conditions allow.
Quick tips
- Give Kulturen a proper stretch of your day, then use Lundagård as an outdoor break rather than squeezing in another museum.
- The Botanical Garden’s outdoor paths are the attraction during the greenhouse renovation. Check access updates before visiting.
