Things to do in Lund in summer: Botanical Garden and Kulturen

Summer in Lund: the Botanical Garden, a proper visit to Kulturen and the living university city.

A summer day in Lund can be as simple as a garden walk, time inside Kulturen’s old houses and a picnic in the park. The university streets are worth exploring too, but you do not need to depend on a student event to enjoy them. Here are five stops that work together, with an indoor art option if the weather changes.

1. Wander in the Botanical Garden

Make time for the outdoor garden rather than treating it as a shortcut. This university garden brings teaching, research and a place to unwind into the same space, with plenty to notice as you move between the planting beds. In summer, let the plants you actually find set the pace instead of arriving with a list of flowers to see.

Good to know

  • Admission is free. Check the current opening times before planning an evening walk.
  • The greenhouses are closed for renovation, and parts of the grounds are affected by construction. Check botan.lu.se for access updates.
  • The garden café is listed as temporarily closed during the works, so plan your fika elsewhere.

2. Spend time at Kulturen

Kulturen is especially rewarding when you can move between the open-air grounds and the interiors of its historic houses. The buildings tell stories of life in town and country, from the Middle Ages to the 1930s. Leave room for an exhibition too: this is a substantial museum visit, not just a garden stroll.

Good to know

  • The regular May–August schedule is daily, with a later evening on Thursday. Check holiday exceptions before you go.
  • Adults pay admission; ages 0–18 enter free. See current prices on kulturen.com.
  • Enter at Tegnérsplatsen 6. Only assistance dogs are allowed in the grounds.

3. Walk through Lundagård and the university quarter

After the museum, take your time around the university square and the streets beside it. The main university building, the Academic Society and Kungshuset make this more than a route to your next stop. It is a way to see Lund’s university identity without needing a ticket or a scheduled event.

Good to know

  • Follow the university stop on Visit Lund’s walking map, centred on Sandgatan 2.
  • Keep this an outdoor walk; access to the interiors of university buildings is not part of the route.
  • Add the nearby cathedral if you want an indoor stop, checking services before sightseeing.

4. Take a picnic to Stadsparken

Stadsparken is the place to stretch the afternoon out. Find a lawn for lunch, explore the gardens or let children spend time in the playground. If you want something more active, the park also has an outdoor gym and Söderlyckans skatepark.

Good to know

  • Bring a picnic; the municipality specifically recommends the lawns for it.
  • Younger children have a shaded play area with a train and sandpit.
  • Public toilets are available by the greenhouse and skatepark. Toilets outside the café follow its opening hours.

5. Combine Skissernas Museum with its sculpture park

For an art stop that still leaves you some time outside, pair Skissernas Museum with the sculpture park. Indoors, sketches and models show how artists develop work for public spaces. Outside, take another look at the sculptures with that process in mind, or just enjoy a short walk among them.

Good to know

  • The sculpture park is free and open around the clock, independently of the museum.
  • The museum normally closes on Mondays. Check current admission and opening times before making it your rainy-day plan.
  • Students and visitors aged 25 and under enter free.
  • Public tours are included in admission and offered in Swedish and English; check the calendar for the right session.

Quick tips

  • Plan around Kulturen’s opening hours, then leave the garden, university walk and picnic flexible.
  • Do not count on the Botanical Garden’s greenhouses or café during the renovation; check its own visitor page before you go.
