Meeting new people in Stockholm

Stockholm can be hard to make friends in. Practical ways to meet people through events, clubs and shared interests.

If introducing yourself without a reason feels awkward, start with something you actually want to do. A language café, beginner class or game gives you a shared focus and a natural way to begin talking. These six places offer different starting points, whether you want to join an organised activity or arrange a first outing with someone.

1. Kulturbiblioteket: practise Swedish together

The language café at Kulturhuset gives you a reason to sit down and talk rather than waiting for a conversation to happen. You can practise Swedish in a relaxed setting with other people doing the same. Think of it as a chance to join in, not a test of how polished your Swedish sounds.

Good to know

  • The café is at Kulturhuset by Sergels torg.
  • Check the official language-café page for the current term dates and session time.
  • The library offers coffee and cake at the sessions; the conversation is in Swedish.

2. Klättercentret Telefonplan: join a climbing taster

A climbing taster gives you something practical to concentrate on while you get used to a new group. At Telefonplan, instructors handle safety and guide the session, so you can focus on trying the rope walls. Choose the shared session if your aim is to take part alongside other beginners.

Good to know

  • No previous experience is required, and equipment is included.
  • Book the standard group taster rather than the private option if you want to join other participants.
  • The centre is at Tellusgången 22–24. Check the official site for available sessions and current prices.
  • Ask the centre about instruction language before booking if you need English.

3. Chicago Swing Dance Studio: start with a taster

If music makes introductions easier, try a beginner session at Chicago. The studio teaches swing dances and runs social dance evenings, giving you an activity to build an outing around. Start with a taster rather than expecting yourself to know the steps already.

Good to know

  • Find the studio at Hornsgatan 75 on Södermalm; Zinkensdamm is the nearest metro station.
  • The official English page lists a drop-in Lindy Hop taster connected with a dance evening; confirm the current programme before going.
  • Check the official site for prices, class registration and any partner requirements.

4. Alphaspel and Alphabar: make games the conversation starter

Choose a game you would enjoy learning and use it as the reason to get together. Alphaspel has a shop and playing space, while the neighbouring Alphabar lends board games to its guests. You could look for an organised gaming event or arrange a table with someone you have already agreed to meet.

Good to know

  • The shop is at Instrumentvägen 2 and Alphabar at Instrumentvägen 4, near Örnsberg metro station.
  • Check the shop event listings for the game, registration requirements and whether beginners can join.
  • Table bookings and bar visits have their own charges and conditions: check the official site for current prices.
  • Do not assume a bar table booking pairs you with strangers; agree your group or join an advertised event.

5. Folkuniversitetet: choose a language course you will return to

A course gives you more than one opportunity to say hello. Folkuniversitetet's Stockholm English courses emphasise spoken communication, so learning itself gives you a reason to talk with classmates. Choose it because the language practice matters to you, with meeting people as a welcome possibility rather than a promised outcome.

Good to know

  • English courses are offered at different levels; choose a course suited to your ability.
  • Check the official listing for the teaching location, start date and number of sessions.
  • Courses are paid: check the official site for current fees before enrolling.

6. ArkDes: plan an exhibition visit with someone

If a class feels like too much commitment, suggest an exhibition visit instead. At ArkDes, architecture and design give you something concrete to talk about as you look around. This is a place to arrange an outing with a new acquaintance, not a promise that ordinary gallery entry is a social mixer.

Good to know

  • Admission is free, and ArkDes is at Exercisplan 4 on Skeppsholmen.
  • Check the official visitor information for hours and the current exhibitions.
  • If you would prefer a shared guided activity, check the current programme: public tours can be seasonal rather than year-round.

Quick tips

  • Choose an activity you would enjoy even if the first visit only leads to a short conversation.
  • For classes and organised sessions, check the language, beginner suitability and booking requirements before committing.
  • If you enjoy the first meeting, suggest a specific next visit rather than leaving it at “sometime”.
  • When meeting someone new, agree a clear public meeting point and keep your own way home.
