Things to do in San Francisco: Ferry Building and waterfront
Things to do in San Francisco: the Ferry Building, the Embarcadero waterfront and the city beyond the postcard sights.
Start at the Ferry Building and let the bay set the pace. You can browse food shops, follow a stretch of the Embarcadero and stop somewhere that gives you more than a view. Save the Presidio or Golden Gate Park for another outing rather than trying to fit the whole city into one waterfront walk. Here are six places to build a visit around, with the details that make them easier to enjoy.
1. Ferry Building Marketplace
The Ferry Building makes a useful beginning because you can decide on food before deciding how far to walk. Browse the merchants, choose something you actually want to eat and take your time around the building. The farmers market adds another reason to linger, but only on its market days.
Good to know
- The building stands at the foot of Market Street on the Embarcadero. Muni, BART and ferries serve the area, and the F-line streetcar stops in front.
- Individual merchants keep different hours; check their listings rather than relying on the building's opening hours.
- Farmers markets run year-round on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Saturday is the larger market.
- The marketplace closes on Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day.
2. Exploratorium at Pier 15
Follow your food stop with something hands-on. The Exploratorium's science and perception exhibits let you experiment rather than simply read, making it a substantial stop for adults as well as children. Its waterfront setting also keeps the day focused on one part of the city.
Good to know
- Find it at Pier 15, between the Ferry Building and Pier 39; choose this as the main stop on your Embarcadero walk.
- Check current admission prices and hours on exploratorium.edu; Mondays are normally closed.
- The Tactile Dome needs a reservation, with advance tickets strongly recommended. Don't assume it's included in a spontaneous visit.
- Thursday After Dark sessions are for ages 18 and over; choose daytime admission for a family outing.
3. Alcatraz Island
Choose Alcatraz when you want the bay crossing itself to be part of the outing. This is a separate island visit, not something to improvise halfway through a packed waterfront day. Reserve it first and leave the other Embarcadero stops flexible around your departure.
Good to know
- Use the National Park Service's link to Alcatraz City Cruises, the concession ferry operator.
- Book well ahead: NPS warns that tickets frequently sell out.
- The ferry leaves from Pier 33 near Bay Street, not the Ferry Building.
- There is a ferry charge rather than a separate island entrance fee; federal recreation passes don't cover that ferry charge.
4. Presidio Tunnel Tops
Tunnel Tops gives you Golden Gate Bridge views without making the day all about a photograph. There are lawns for a picnic, food vendors and the Outpost playground, with a walking connection down towards Crissy Field. It's a good choice when you want room to sit as well as explore.
Good to know
- The park is free and open every day. Check separate schedules for food vendors and staffed facilities.
- The free daily Presidio GO Downtown Route connects the park with Embarcadero BART and the Transbay Terminal; check the timetable because some weekday trips are restricted.
- Start at the Presidio Visitor Center, 210 Lincoln Boulevard, if you'd like help choosing a route.
- Bring a warm layer for time beside the bay, even in summer.
5. San Francisco Botanical Garden
For a different side of the city, spend an outing among the garden's plant collections. You can move from California plants to cloud-forest collections, or simply choose a small part of the 55-acre garden and take it slowly. This is an alternative to another pier, not an extra stop to rush through afterwards.
Good to know
- Check current admission options and closing times on the Gardens of Golden Gate Park website.
- Last entry is earlier than closing, so don't leave your arrival to the final minutes.
- A daytime garden ticket doesn't include separately ticketed night events; book those independently if one interests you.
6. Ferry Plaza Farmers Market
Come back on a market morning if food is one of your main reasons for visiting. California growers and food makers fill the stalls, with the larger Saturday market spreading around the front and rear of the Ferry Building. Make this a shopping-and-lunch outing rather than assuming it's the same experience as the indoor marketplace.
Good to know
- Tuesday and Thursday markets run 10 am–2 pm; Saturday runs 8 am–2 pm, year-round.
- Choose Saturday for the larger range of vendors, or a weekday for a smaller market along the Embarcadero.
- Foodwise operates the market; use its vendor information linked from the Ferry Building site to plan specific stops.
Quick tips
- An easy waterfront day: Ferry Building, a selected Embarcadero stretch, then the Exploratorium. Give Alcatraz its own reservation-led outing.
- Pack layers rather than dressing for the season's name: summer fog and wind can make the waterfront feel cool.
