Things to do in San Francisco by season: fall, winter, summer

What to do in San Francisco through the year: packing for the waterfront in summer, clear fall days, and shorter outings in winter.

San Francisco doesn't follow the usual summer-equals-warm rule. Fog can make the summer waterfront cool, while early fall is often warmer; winter is the wetter season. Keep a layer with you, let the forecast choose the longer walks and use these five outings to change the pace rather than chase guaranteed sunshine.

1. Summer: Ferry Building and a short Embarcadero walk

Start with the merchants inside the Ferry Building, then decide how much waterfront time feels comfortable. Food gives the outing a purpose even when fog hides the distant views. Keep the walk short if the bay wind takes the fun out of lingering.

Good to know

  • Pack a warm layer and wind-resistant jacket; the official tourism board notes cool, breezy and foggy summer conditions near the water.
  • Merchant hours vary, so check the shops you care about before choosing an early or late visit.
  • Use Muni, BART or ferry connections to reach the building; the F-line streetcar stops directly outside.

2. Fall: Presidio Tunnel Tops and Crissy Field

On a clear fall day, use Tunnel Tops for a picnic and Golden Gate Bridge views, then follow the connection towards Crissy Field if you feel like walking. September and October are warmer on average than midsummer, but that isn't a promise for your particular afternoon. Keep the picnic and the longer walk as separate decisions.

Good to know

  • Tunnel Tops is free and open daily; food vendors and staffed attractions have their own schedules.
  • The free Presidio GO Downtown Route serves the park daily. Check for weekday trips restricted to residents and tenants.
  • Bring layers even if it starts warm, and shorten the exposed waterfront part if conditions change.

3. Winter: Exploratorium at Pier 15

Give a wet winter day one main indoor stop. The Exploratorium's hands-on exhibits make it easy to spend time experimenting instead of watching the weather between attractions. Add a nearby waterfront stretch only if conditions suit it; the museum doesn't need a long walk attached.

Good to know

  • Check paid admission and current hours before setting out; Mondays are normally closed.
  • Reserve separately if you want the Tactile Dome, which requires a booking.
  • Thursday After Dark is 18-plus. Families should choose a daytime session.

4. Spring: San Francisco Botanical Garden

Use a suitable spring day to explore a few of the botanical garden's different plant collections. The California and cloud-forest areas offer a reason to look closely without depending on one flower being at its peak. Give yourself time to wander, but don't feel you need to cover all 55 acres.

Good to know

  • Check current admission and last-entry times on the garden's official page.
  • Spring rain generally tapers towards summer, but bring a waterproof layer when the forecast calls for it.
  • Check current garden information for what's looking good rather than booking around an assumed bloom date.

5. Any season: Ferry Plaza Farmers Market

The market runs year-round, so you can make seasonal food part of a visit without chasing a one-off festival. Saturday brings the larger spread of growers and food makers around the Ferry Building, while the weekday markets make a shorter food stop. Choose your day first, then plan the rest of the waterfront around it.

Good to know

  • Markets run Tuesday and Thursday, 10 am–2 pm, and Saturday, 8 am–2 pm.
  • The weekday markets are smaller and sit along the front of the building; Saturday also uses the rear plaza.
  • Keep a rain layer handy in winter. Indoor merchant hours are separate from farmers market hours.

Quick tips

  • Let clear conditions decide when to do the Presidio, rather than saving it for a day that happens to be labelled summer.
  • In winter, keep your route compact: one food stop and one museum is enough without adding a boat booking.
