Things to do in Umeå: Bildmuseet and Västerbottens museum

Things to do in Umeå: contemporary art at Bildmuseet and regional history at Västerbottens museum.

Umeå gives you two very different museum days: contemporary art beside the river at Bildmuseet, and regional history up at Västerbottens museum and Gammlia. Add a museum about women’s history, an outdoor sculpture collection and a river walk, and you have enough for a varied weekend. Here are six places to choose from, without trying to fit them all into one afternoon.

1. Bildmuseet

Start with contemporary art beside the Umeälven river. Bildmuseet’s changing exhibitions are a reason to go inside, but the building and its views across the water are part of the visit too. Give yourself time to look out as well as at the art, then continue along the river promenade.

Good to know

  • Admission is free. Regular opening is Wednesday to Sunday; check holiday closures before you go.
  • Find it at Umeå Arts Campus, on the river promenade near the city centre.
  • Check the guided-tour calendar if you would like an introduction in English.

2. Västerbottens museum

Head to Gammlia for a museum that brings Västerbotten’s history into focus. Cultural history, art, textiles and documentary photography share the building, so you can follow the subjects that interest you rather than work through everything. The café and shop make it easy to pause before exploring outside.

Good to know

  • Admission is free; check current opening hours on vbm.se.
  • The main museum normally closes on Mondays. Special holiday and evening opening can differ.
  • The visitor address is Helena Elisabeths väg 3. The museum can be reached on foot, by bicycle or by public transport from the centre.
  • The historic houses outside have their own seasonal opening; do not assume the main museum’s hours apply to them.

3. Gammlia open-air museum

Step outside the main museum to see historic buildings brought here from around Västerbotten. The collection of about 30 buildings makes the region’s past more tangible, from homes and farm settings to other parts of everyday life. Summer is the time to come for open interiors and a fuller activity programme.

Good to know

  • Check the current Gammlia programme for house opening, guided visits and activities.
  • Building interiors mainly open in summer or for specific activities; an outdoor visit is not the same as access to every house.
  • Combine it with Västerbottens museum, which runs the open-air museum on the same site.

4. Kvinnohistoriskt museum

At the Museum of Women’s History, the questions are about gender, power, identity and whose stories get told. It is a different perspective from a conventional local-history museum, and a good choice if you enjoy exhibitions that give you something to discuss afterwards. You will find it in Väven, the cultural centre beside the river.

Good to know

  • Admission is free, and regular opening is Monday to Saturday, with Sunday closed. Check current and summer hours.
  • Find it in Väven at Storgatan 46a.
  • English introductions for groups can be arranged by contacting the museum in advance.

5. Umedalens Skulpturpark

Make a separate outing to Umedalen for art in the grounds of a former hospital. Sculptures by Swedish and international artists are spread through the area, including work by Louise Bourgeois, Antony Gormley and Anish Kapoor. It is a different experience from a gallery: you can walk between the pieces and spend longer with the ones that catch your eye.

Good to know

  • The park is free and open around the clock, all year.
  • It is about 5 km from central Umeå, so allow for the journey rather than treating it as a central riverside stop.
  • The park website gives public-transport directions. Check the current route on the regional journey planner before travelling.

6. Strandpromenaden and the river bridges

Leave time for the Umeälven itself. The riverside promenade lets you step away from the museums without leaving the city, and you can turn the walk into a loop using Lundabron and Gamla bron. It is a useful way to spend part of a day without another ticket or exhibition timetable.

Good to know

  • Visit Umeå’s suggested loop goes west from the centre, across Lundabron to Bölesholmarna, then returns through Teg and over Gamla bron.
  • The full suggested circuit is about 4 km; turn back sooner if you only want a short walk.
  • Use the official walking guide to choose your route before setting off.

Quick tips

  • Keep Västerbottens museum and Gammlia together, but allow separate time for the trip to Umedalen.
  • Bildmuseet normally closes on Mondays and Tuesdays. Kvinnohistoriskt museum can be an indoor alternative on those days; check holiday exceptions.
