Things to do in Umeå in summer: Bildmuseet and Gammlia
Summer in Umeå: Bildmuseet by the river and the Gammlia open-air area at Västerbottens museum.
Summer in Umeå is a good time to combine the city’s museums with time outside. Start with art and river views at Bildmuseet, then give Gammlia its own visit for historic houses and the summer activity programme. These five stops also leave room for a riverside walk, outdoor sculpture and a swim if the weather suits you.
1. Art and river views at Bildmuseet
Make Bildmuseet your art stop beside the Umeälven. The changing contemporary exhibitions and views over the river give you reasons to linger indoors, even on a fine day. Afterwards, step back onto the promenade and keep the afternoon flexible.
Good to know
- Admission is free. Regular opening is Wednesday to Sunday; check summer holiday exceptions.
- The museum closes on Midsummer’s Eve and Midsummer’s Day, regardless of weekday.
- Find it at Umeå Arts Campus, beside the river promenade near the centre.
2. A summer visit to Gammlia
This is the season to give the open-air museum a proper visit. Around 30 historic buildings have been brought to Gammlia from across Västerbotten, and the summer programme adds open interiors, guided visits and practical activities. Pair the outdoor visit with the exhibitions at Västerbottens museum rather than choosing between them.
Good to know
- Check the current summer dates and daily programme on vbm.se; individual houses and activities have their own times.
- Look for craft activities and historic household demonstrations, but confirm what is running on your day.
- Västerbottens museum has free admission and an indoor café, useful if the weather changes.
- The main museum’s opening hours and the outdoor summer programme are separate, so check both.
3. Walk the river loop
For a summer walk without leaving town, follow the promenade west and cross Lundabron to Bölesholmarna. Continue through Teg and come back over Gamla bron for a different view of the river. You can make this a walk in its own right rather than another journey between venues.
Good to know
- The route suggested by Visit Umeå is about 4 km.
- Use the official walking guide for the bridge sequence: Lundabron out, Gamla bron back.
- If you want less walking, stay on the central promenade and turn back whenever you like.
4. Explore Umedalens Skulpturpark
Take your art viewing outside among the buildings and trees of the former Umedalen hospital grounds. The permanent sculpture collection includes Swedish and international artists, with works by Louise Bourgeois, Antony Gormley and Anish Kapoor. It is a good summer option when you would rather wander at your own pace than spend another afternoon indoors.
Good to know
- Entry is free and the park is open around the clock, all year.
- The park is about 5 km from central Umeå; plan the journey separately from your river walk.
- Use the transport directions on the park website, then confirm current departures with the regional journey planner.
5. Swim or walk at Nydalasjön
If you want a break from museums, head to Nydalasjön for a lakeside afternoon. The recreation area offers swimming and walking, with a route around the lake if you feel like a longer outing. You can also keep it simple and choose a short walk followed by a picnic.
Good to know
- The full walking and cycling route around the lake is about 10 km; you do not have to do the whole circuit.
- Bring swimwear if you want a dip, and choose your stop using the official area information.
- There are prepared barbecue areas around the lake; check local fire restrictions before lighting anything.
Quick tips
- Check Gammlia’s summer programme first, then arrange your museum visit around the houses and activities you most want to see.
- Do not save Bildmuseet for a Monday or Tuesday, and check its Midsummer closures when planning a holiday weekend.
